UK Manager Training

Workplace mental health training that actually changes behaviour

Most mental-health training is a one-off awareness session that fades in six weeks. Ours is built around the conversations managers run every single week — workload, energy, recovery, the first quiet signs of trouble — so it sticks.

What managers will leave able to do

  • Spot the four early signs of burnout in a direct report
  • Open a supportive conversation without overstepping into clinical territory
  • Adjust workload, expectations and recovery without breaking team output
  • Signpost safely to EAP, GP and internal support
  • Know when to escalate to HR and what the legal duty looks like

The curriculum

  • Module 1 — How work damages and protects mental health (HSE Management Standards)
  • Module 2 — The four-signal model: spotting burnout 6 weeks earlier
  • Module 3 — The supportive conversation framework (practiced live)
  • Module 4 — Workload, recovery and sustainable performance
  • Module 5 — Signposting, confidentiality and the legal duty

Format and delivery

Half-day intensive (3 hours), delivered on-site across the UK or live virtual. Cohort size 8–16 for live practice. Includes a manager pocket-card, the conversation framework and a 30-day reinforcement nudge sequence. Attendees receive a Certificate of Completion stating CPD-aligned hours — self-claimed against their own professional body. MEM is not a regulated awarding body.

Champion programme (optional)

For a small cohort across the business who carry mental-health literacy day-to-day: two half-day modules plus quarterly supervision. Champions are the single most effective intervention for sustaining culture change between formal training cycles.

Frequently asked questions

What is workplace mental health training?

Workplace mental health training equips managers and colleagues to recognise the early signs of common mental-health pressures (stress, burnout, anxiety, low mood), have a supportive first conversation, and signpost to professional help. It is not therapy and it is not clinical assessment.

Is workplace mental health training a legal requirement in the UK?

Employers have a duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act and the HSE Management Standards to assess and manage work-related stress. Training is not specifically mandated, but it is one of the most defensible ways to evidence that duty in an HSE inspection or employment tribunal.

Who should attend?

Three audiences: every people manager (the spotting-and-conversation module), exec/HR (the strategy module), and ideally a cohort of trained champions across the business. Frontline staff get a shorter awareness session.

How long does the training take?

Manager module: half a day (3 hours). Champion programme: two half-days plus quarterly supervision. Exec/HR strategy module: 90 minutes. All delivered on-site or virtually across the UK.

How is this different from Mental Health First Aid?

MHFA-style courses focus on crisis response. Our training is built for ongoing line-management — daily one-to-ones, workload conversations, and early signs — which is where most workplace mental-health damage actually accumulates. We are not affiliated with MHFA England.

Is this CPD-accredited?

CPD-aligned, not CPD-accredited by a chartered body. Attendees receive a Certificate of Completion stating the CPD-aligned hours, which they can self-claim against their own professional body's CPD log. MEM Academy is not a regulated awarding body (e.g. Ofqual) and does not issue regulated qualifications.
