Starting again through fitness
For Derrick Twum, personal training was not just a job. It was a way to rebuild. After prison, fitness became a route into income, structure, confidence and independence. PT gave him a skill that could be used immediately. It also created the flexibility to think bigger.
This matters because many coaches come into fitness with a story. Some have overcome health challenges. Some have changed their body. Some have rebuilt confidence. Some have grown up around adversity. Some simply know what fitness did for them and want to pass that on.
Your story is not something to hide. Used properly, it can become the foundation of your brand and purpose.
PT as the foundation
The key lesson is that PT can be the start, not the ceiling. Derrick earned as a coach, but the bigger plan was to build MEM: MEMFitness as a purpose-driven fitness brand, MEM Academy CIC as a community organisation, and a wider ecosystem connecting fitness, opportunity, mentoring and enterprise.
That did not happen by treating PT as just hourly sessions. It came from seeing fitness as a platform.
What PTs can learn from this
Not every coach needs to build an activewear brand or CIC. But every coach can think bigger than the next session.
A PT can evolve into an online coach, group programme leader, content creator, fitness educator, community coach, corporate wellbeing provider, youth fitness provider, social enterprise founder, product creator or brand builder.
The question is not only "How do I get clients?" The bigger question is: "What can my coaching become?"
Founder insight — Derrick Twum
The MEM model came from lived experience, not theory. PT gave Derrick the freedom to earn, but the mission was always bigger: use fitness to create pathways, opportunity and impact.
Key takeaway
Your PT skill can be the foundation for a bigger business, brand or mission.
