Lesson 1 of 6

Purpose-driven does not mean unprofitable

~9 min

Learning objectives

  • Reject the false choice between profit and purpose
  • See profit as the fuel for impact, not the enemy of it
  • Name the mission your business is actually serving
  • Decide what 'enough profit' looks like to keep the mission alive

The myth that purpose and profit are opposites

A lot of mission-led founders quietly believe that charging properly makes them less ethical. That belief is what keeps purpose-driven brands small, fragile and dependent on grant money that never quite arrives.

Profit is not the enemy of purpose. Profit is what pays coaches fairly, keeps the lights on, funds community programmes and lets you say no to work that does not fit the mission.

Mission first, then a business model that funds it

Define the mission in one sentence — who you serve, what you change for them, and why it matters. Then design a commercial model strong enough to actually deliver on that mission year after year.

A purpose-driven business that runs out of cash helps nobody. Sustainability is part of the mission, not a betrayal of it.

Decide what 'enough' looks like

Set a profit number that keeps the mission alive: pays the team properly, funds the community work, builds a cash reserve and pays the founder a fair wage. That is not greed. That is the operating cost of purpose.

Founder insight — Derrick Twum

MEM Academy CIC and MEMFitness exist because the commercial side funds the community side. Without the commercial brand earning real money, the CIC cannot deliver in prisons, schools and underserved communities.

Key takeaway

Purpose-driven brands need profit to survive. Define the mission, then build a model that funds it sustainably.

Reflection questions

  1. 1What is the mission in one sentence?
  2. 2Where are you under-charging because it feels 'wrong' to charge properly?
  3. 3What is 'enough profit' to keep the mission alive for the next three years?

Action task

Write your mission in one sentence (who, what change, why). Then write the annual profit number the business needs to deliver that mission sustainably.
