Fitness Entrepreneur Lab

Build more than a PT business. Build a fitness brand.

Learn how to launch and manage both service-based and product-based fitness businesses — from online coaching and group programmes to ecommerce, activewear, COGS, conversion rates, digital ads, email marketing and brand growth.

This track is built from the MEM journey: using personal training as the foundation to build MEMFitness, a product-based fitness brand, and MEM Academy CIC, a community impact organisation.

This is education and business planning support. It does not guarantee sales, profit, funding, ad performance or business success. Results depend on product quality, offer clarity, market demand, pricing, execution, cash flow, consistency and customer experience.

Founder journey

From PT income to fitness brand building

Personal training created the first income stream. But the long-term MEM vision was never only to sell sessions. PT created the freedom to build MEMFitness as a product-based brand and MEM Academy CIC as a community impact organisation. This track teaches coaches how to think like entrepreneurs: understand the numbers, build offers, launch products, test marketing, manage costs, create content, serve customers and build a brand with long-term value.

PT gave me freedom, but the bigger plan was always to build the MEM brand. If you only sell sessions, your income depends on your diary. If you build systems, offers and products, you start building assets.
Derrick Twum

Why this track exists

Most PTs are trained to coach, not to run a fitness business

  • PTs understand training but often do not understand business models.
  • Many coaches do not know the difference between service income and product income.
  • Many coaches do not understand COGS, gross margin, net profit, AOV, CVR, CPA, ROAS or cash flow.
  • Many coaches run ads without understanding the numbers.
  • Many coaches sell products without understanding stock, fulfilment, returns or margin.
  • Many coaches post content without understanding offer, funnel or conversion.
  • Many coaches want a brand but do not understand product-market fit.
  • Many coaches want to launch apparel or accessories but underestimate sampling, inventory, sizing, returns, photography, website conversion and paid ads.
  • Many coaches want to scale online coaching but do not understand delivery systems, retention, recurring revenue and customer support.
  • MEM teaches the missing bridge: fitness skill + business model + numbers + marketing + brand infrastructure.

A fitness entrepreneur does not only ask, 'How do I get clients?' They ask, 'What model am I building, what does it cost, how does it convert, and how does it scale?'

Service vs Product vs Hybrid

Three fitness business models, side by side

Each model trades off speed, cost, ceiling and defensibility differently. Read all three before choosing.

Service-based fitness business

  • Sells time, coaching, programmes and expertise
  • Lower startup cost
  • Faster to launch
  • Income depends on leads, retention and delivery capacity
  • Can become online, hybrid, group or corporate
  • Main metrics: leads, consultations, close rate, retention, churn, MRR

Product-based fitness business

  • Sells physical or digital products
  • Higher upfront cost if physical stock is involved
  • Needs ecommerce, product quality, fulfilment and margin control
  • Can scale beyond personal time but requires cash flow discipline
  • Main metrics: COGS, gross margin, AOV, CVR, CPA, ROAS, return rate, repeat purchase rate

Hybrid fitness brand

  • Combines services, products, content and community
  • Strongest long-term brand opportunity
  • Harder to manage but more defensible
  • Can connect coaching, merchandise, digital products, community programmes and social impact
  • Main metrics: revenue mix, customer lifetime value, audience growth, retention, profit, impact outcomes
