Lesson 3 of 6
Product-based fitness models explained
Learning objectives
- Understand physical vs digital product businesses
- See the cost and cash flow reality before launching
- Learn the unit economics that decide success
- Choose a product idea worth validating
What 'product-based' really means
A product-based fitness business sells a physical or digital product instead of your hours. Physical examples: activewear, lifting gloves, resistance bands, branded merchandise, supplements. Digital examples: programmes, ebooks, courses, challenge packs, mobility plans, nutrition guides.
Products can scale beyond your personal time. They can also lose money quietly if you do not understand the numbers.
Strengths and weaknesses
Strengths: revenue is not capped by your diary, brand assets compound, you reach customers beyond your local area, and you can sell while you sleep.
Weaknesses: upfront cost on stock, sampling and photography; cash is tied up before sales arrive; returns and sizing eat margin; quality control is on you; product-market fit is brutal if you guess.
The numbers you cannot skip
COGS (cost of goods sold), gross margin, AOV (average order value), CVR (conversion rate), CPA (cost per acquisition) and cash flow. We teach these properly in Module B. If you launch products without them, you are guessing with real money.
Founder insight — Derrick Twum
MEMFitness moved through product-based fitness goods, activewear and accessories. Products can absolutely scale — but every product founder learns the hard way that gross margin and cash flow matter more than launch-day sales.
Key takeaway
Products can scale beyond your hours, but only if COGS, margin and cash flow are understood before stock is ordered.
Reflection questions
- 1Why this product, why now, for whom?
- 2What problem does it actually solve?
- 3Can you fund the first stock order without putting the rest of the business at risk?
- 4Would you buy it at the price you plan to charge?
Action task
Write a one-paragraph product brief: customer, problem, format, cost, price, fulfilment method, biggest risk.
