Lesson 2 of 7
AI workout generation workflow
Learning objectives
- Use AI to draft programmes faster without losing quality
- Build a repeatable brief you can reuse for every client
- Layer your coaching judgement on top of every AI output
- Avoid the most common AI workout mistakes
Why generic AI workouts fail
Most coaches type "give me a 4-week strength programme" and paste the result. That is why AI plans feel generic. The problem is not the AI — it is the brief. AI can only return what you give it.
A strong programme brief includes: client goal, training age, equipment access, frequency, session length, injuries / restrictions, weakest area, preferred style, and any non-negotiables.
A reusable AI workout brief
Use this template every time: "Design a [weeks] [style] programme for a [age, sex, training age] client with [goal]. They train [days/week] for [minutes] using [equipment]. Avoid [contraindications]. Prioritise [weak area]. Use progressive overload across the block. Format as week, day, exercise, sets, reps, rest, RPE."
Then review every session against your coaching eye before sending. Adjust volume, swap exercises for client preference, and add coaching cues the AI cannot know.
Common AI workout mistakes to fix
Mistake 1: too many novel exercises. Replace with proven movements your client can execute. Mistake 2: unrealistic volume for the training age. Cut sets. Mistake 3: no progression model. Add a clear week-on-week scheme. Mistake 4: ignoring injuries. Always re-state contraindications. Mistake 5: no warm-up or cool-down. Add them.
Use the AI Workout Generator inside MEM, but always do a final coach pass.
Founder insight — Derrick Twum
Derrick and the MEM team built the AI Workout Generator specifically so coaches stop reinventing programmes from scratch — but the platform was always designed for the coach to do the final edit. The leverage is in the draft, not in the publish.
Key takeaway
AI does not replace programme design. A reusable brief + a coach review pass turns a 90-minute build into a 15-minute build without lowering quality.
Reflection questions
- 1How long do you currently spend building one client programme?
- 2What is missing from your usual AI brief?
- 3Which AI mistakes above have ended up in plans you've sent?
- 4How will you sense-check every AI programme before it goes out?
Action task
Take one current client and build their next training block using the brief template above. Record before and after time to build.
