What online coaching actually includes
Learning objectives
- Understand what online coaching is and is not
- Stop reducing online coaching to “sending plans”
- Identify the core parts of a professional online offer
- Understand why structure creates trust
Online coaching is more than a workout plan
Many new online coaches make the mistake of thinking online coaching means sending a workout plan and checking in sometimes. That is not enough. A client is not only paying for exercises. They are paying for structure, direction, support, accountability, progression and confidence that someone is guiding them properly.
A professional online coaching offer should answer the client’s biggest question: “If I join this programme, what happens next?” The clearer the answer, the easier it is to sell.
The core parts of online coaching
A strong online coaching offer usually includes a clear goal or transformation, an initial consultation or onboarding form, a training plan, nutrition guidance or meal support within safe boundaries, weekly or fortnightly check-ins, progress tracking, communication rules, an accountability system, education and resources, adjustments based on progress, a clear programme length, a clear price, and a clear next step after the programme.
The coach does not need to overcomplicate it. But the client must understand what they are buying.
Why structure matters
Online clients can disappear quickly if the programme feels vague. They are not seeing the coach in person every week, so the structure must carry the relationship. Check-ins, reminders, progress tracking, clear expectations and a simple dashboard help clients feel supported.
Without structure, online coaching becomes random messages. With structure, it becomes a real service.
Founder insight — Derrick Twum
Derrick learned through PT that people do not only pay for exercises. They pay for confidence, accountability and trust. The move from session-by-session coaching to a bigger business starts when the coach can package that value clearly.
Key takeaway
Online coaching is not the absence of in-person training. It is a structured coaching service delivered remotely.
Reflection questions
- 1If a client joined your online coaching today, would they know exactly what happens next?
- 2Are you currently selling a clear outcome or just access to you?
- 3What parts of online coaching do you already have?
- 4What parts are missing?
Action task
Write a simple list of everything your online coaching would include. Then separate the list into “must-have”, “nice-to-have” and “future add-on.”
