Lesson 4 of 9
Safeguarding basics every community coach must hold
Learning objectives
- Understand what safeguarding actually means in fitness delivery
- Know the minimum training, paperwork and behaviours expected
- Build a referral pathway you can show a buyer in 60 seconds
- Stop conflating safeguarding with safety / first aid
Safeguarding is about people, not paperwork
Safeguarding is your duty to protect participants — particularly children, young people and at-risk adults — from harm. It covers behaviour in sessions, communication, supervision, disclosures and onward referral. Paperwork is the evidence trail, not the thing itself.
Minimum standard
Up-to-date safeguarding training appropriate to your audience (children / adults at risk). Clear behaviour rules in sessions (1-to-1 contact, photo use, comms channels). A named referral contact at the organisation. A simple written record of any concern. Never investigate a disclosure yourself — record and refer.
The 60-second pathway
A buyer should be able to ask 'what do you do if a young person discloses something in your session?' and you should have a clean answer: I listen, I don't promise confidentiality, I record factually, I report to your named safeguarding lead the same day.
Founder insight — Derrick Twum
Schools and youth charities rule coaches out within one conversation if safeguarding sounds vague. Sound specific or you don't get the contract.
Key takeaway
Safeguarding is a 60-second pathway, current training, and an evidence trail — not a folder full of policies.
Reflection questions
- 1Is your safeguarding training current and audience-appropriate?
- 2Can you describe your 60-second pathway right now?
- 3Where do you record concerns?
- 4Who is your named referral contact for each organisation?
Action task
Write your 60-second safeguarding pathway today. Save it in the same place as your insurance + DBS so you can send all three together.
